7 Frequently Asked Questions on Skin and Coat Health

BY Veterinarian Recommended Solutions

Our incredible team of veterinary technicians are here to support you and your pet. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions they receive on skin health in dogs and cats and the products we have to support skin health.

What do omega‑3s do for skin and coat health?

Omega‑3 fatty acids help support a normal inflammatory response and healthy skin and coat condition as part of everyday wellness.

Omega-3s EPA and DHA are important nutrients that mammals can’t make or store, so they must be consumed. Commercial pet foods often contain high levels of the pro-inflammatory omega-6 arachidonic acid (AA) and low levels of omega-3s, some with ratios as high as 20:1, which may lead to inflammation in many systems of the body. Dogs and cats need some inflammation to heal wounds and fight infection, but too much inflammation over time can lead to other health concerns.

Since many skin conditions have an inflammatory component and pets can often have an omega-6:omega-3 imbalance, supplementing with these potent nutrients may help support healthy functioning of these systems as part of your pet’s long term care plan.

What role does Vitamin E play in skin health?

Vitamin E supports skin integrity and helps maintain normal histamine levels during seasonal changes. Many pets with skin conditions have lower than ideal levels of Vitamin E, so supplementing can help them with skin related issues from allergies and to support the normal detoxification process.

I know Vitamin E is good for my skin health – can I just use that for my dog or cat?

Many Vitamin E products contain extremely high and dangerous concentrations not intended for pets. That’s why it’s important to use appropriate dosing recommendations compiled from years of research of using Vitamin E to support skin and coat health in dogs and cats.

What makes TruBenefits® Omega different?

TruBenefits® Omega is backed by two of the largest gold standard clinical studies ever done in pet medicine, including one study on skin health. It’s different from other fish oils on the market not only because of it’s clinical backing, but also because of its form, source, and safety.

Form: TruBenefits® Omega is in the more absorbable Triglyceride form. Most companies produce their fish oil for dogs and cats in the less expensive ethyl ester form, requiring significantly higher doses of EPA and DHA.

Source: TruBenefits® Omega contains oil from sustainably sourced pelagic fish (anchovy, mackerel, and sardines). These small, schooling fish do not have a life cycle long enough to bioaccumulate as many harmful heavy metals as other deep-water fish (salmon, cod, etc).

Safety: Like all VRS products, TruBenefits® Omega is backed by rigorous, 3rd-Party Testing to ensure purity, quality and safety. We test the final product for more than 400 contaminants and toxins commonly found in fish oils.

What makes TruBenefits® Cutaneo different?

TruBenefits® Cutaneo contains 3 types of easily absorbable Vitamin E that provides relief for itchy pets and promotes overall skin and coat health. It is specifically formulated dosed for dogs and cats, compiled from years of clinical research on using Vitamin E in pets, not people. Published research offers substantial support for its unique blend of mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols. Plus, like all VRS products, its 3rd-Party Tested for purity and safety, with results published on our website for every bottle.

Can TruBenefits® Omega and TruBenefits® Cutaneo be used together?

Yes! They’re often paired to provide both internal, targeted skin support during allergy season and beyond.

Combining TruBenefits® Omega and TruBenefits® Cutaneo offers two ways to support skin health: TruBenefits® Omega supports a healthy inflammatory response in the skin and coat. TruBenefits® Cutaneo and its 3 highly absorbable forms of Vitamin E supports skin barrier function.

How long before I see results with TruBenefits® Omega and TruBenefits® Cutaneo?

Skin and coat supplements work gradually. Consistent, daily use is recommended. TruBenefits® Omega can show results within 6-8 weeks, but full results can take up to 12 weeks.  TruBenefits® Cutaneo offers results in as little as 4 weeks. Both products require long term use to sustain long term benefits.
